Xara Xtreme on the Mac We have a new cross-platform code base, WXWidgets based, that is cross platform C and should work on the Mac, but we're short of Mac developers and testers that can help progress this. If you're a Mac developer willing to help us please contact us.
Xara Xtreme on the Mac Ironically, given the dominance of the Mac in graphic design circles, there is no mass-market, high performance, easy-to-use graphic-design tools available for the Mac. For more than 10 years, we've had a continuous stream of Mac users asking, begging, that we port Xara X to their platform. Xara 3D Maker by Xara Group Ltd is a powerful graphical design application that gives you the possibility to add 3D effects to your texts. Unfortunately, you can't install Xara 3D Maker for Mac without a virtualization software. So, you might want to download other graphical design tools for Mac.
Xara is an international software company founded in 1981, with an HQ in Berlin and development office in Hemel Hempstead, UK. It has developed software for a variety of computer platforms, in chronological order: the Acorn Atom, BBC Micro, Z88, Atari ST, Acorn Archimedes, Microsoft Windows, Linux, and more recently web browser-based services.
History[edit]
The company was founded in 1981 by Charles Moir. It started by developing for various 8-bit systems, such as the Acorn Atom and BBC Micro.[2]. It was originally called Computer Concepts, Ltd.; the company name was changed to Xara, Ltd., in 1995, and later to The Xara Group, Ltd. iXara Ltd started to explore cloud developments, and since 2016 both companies have been subsidiaries of Xara GmbH.
Atari ST and Acorn Archimedes development[edit]
Linux and Mac OS X Xara Xtreme LX (2006) – Open Source / Free Software port of the software. Since 2008 there has been no further development of Xara Xtreme for Linux. XARA X is quite simply the best value vector graphics package you will ever see. Ideal for creating both print and web graphics, Xara X is so simple to use, literally anyone can produce professional quality vector or bitmap images within a matter of minutes.
In 1986, they released its first piece of software for the next generation of computers, Fast ASM for the Atari ST. Development was focused on software for the Acorn Archimedes when it was released in 1987. ArtWorks, the predecessor to Xara Xtreme, was released on the Archimedes.[2]
Xara Networks[edit]
In 1995, a subsidiary company called Xara Networks, Ltd. was formed, specializing in the provision of high-bandwidth Internet connectivity to companies and ISPs. Xara Networks was subsequently sold to the ITG group in London, most commonly known for the Global Internet brand, and was subsequently renamed GX Networks.
Move to Windows[edit]
Early in the 1990s, Xara began developing for Microsoft Windows 95, as Acorn Computers struggled for market share. Artworks was rewritten from the ground up for the platform and in 1994 it was released as Xara Studio. This involved a team of 20+ developers, who worked for more than two years to produce a competitor to then market-leading drawing software CorelDRAW.[citation needed]
The Canadian company Corel brought the marketing rights of the software and re-branded it as CorelXARA. Corel marketed it as a web-oriented companion to CorelDRAW, but it was clearly designed as a stand-alone alternative to the older software.[citation needed] The arrangement with Corel ended after five years.[2]
In 2000, Xara released the software themselves as Xara X, which was superseded by Xara X¹ in 2004, then Xara Xtreme in 2005, later renamed Xara Photo & Graphic Designer. In 2006, an enhanced version was released, named Xara Xtreme Pro, later renamed Xara Designer Pro.[2]
Xara has released other Windows titles relating to publishing and design, for print and the web, including Web Designer, Page & Layout Designer and Xara 3D Maker.
Xara Cloud SaaS (Software as a Service)[edit]
Since 2015, Xara has offered cloud based services under the name of Xara Online Designer while in beta, with full release under the name Xara Cloud in 2018. Xara Cloud can be used to create, edit and share a range of business documents in a web browser using any device. These can be documents created with Xara's desktop titles, or any of the document templates provided by Xara Cloud.

Location[edit]
Gaddesden Place in Hertfordshire
Since 1984, Xara's development has taken place in Gaddesden Place, Hemel Hempstead, an 18th-century Palladian style villa, designed by the celebrated architect James Wyatt, built in 1768 and reputed to be his first building in the UK.[3] Xara HQ is now in Berlin.

Xara Xtreme
You can download a version of Xara Xtreme for Linux right now, which should work straight away on most Linux machines (note: this is not source code - you don't have to build it to try it, for source code look here). Development is progressing daily, so we provide two versions for download. The first is the recommended download because it will normally be the most stable. The second is the very latest, untested version, built and published automatically - the cutting edge version of Xara Xtreme, so at times it may be unstable.
The easiest and recommended way to install Xara Xtreme on your system is to download and install the Autopackage archive (.package file). Click here for Autopackage installation instructions. Alternatively, download and unpack one of the tar archives (see tar archive instructions below).
Xara Xtreme on Linux is now a working drawing tool. The archives below include the full Xara Xtreme help.
Recommended version:
» Download Xara Xtreme (version 0.7 Revision 1692) (Autopackage Archive - 19MB)
» Download Xara Xtreme (version 0.7 Revision 1692) (Tar Bzip2 Archive - 19MB)
Latest version (potentially unstable):

Tar Archive Installation Instructions on Linux on 32 bit x86 architecture (i.e. most PC linux)
If you don't want to use the Autopackage provided, download one of the tar files instead and unpack it using the following tar command (the archive is bzip2 compressed):- This will give you a xaralx directory which contains the xaralx executable and supporting files. Just run bin/xaralx. There is also an 'Examples' subfolder containing a bunch of example designs (XAR files). Use the File, Open menu option to open a XAR file.
The binaries we distribute require libstdc++ version 5, which is not installed as standard on some modern distributions (for example Ubuntu 5.10). To install this library you will need to install a compatibility package using your distributions package manager (called something like libstdc++5 or compat-libstdc++-33). This is not neccessary if you install using the Autopackage archive as Autopackage takes care of this automatically.
Tar Archive Installation Instructions on Linux AMD64
Xara Xtreme compiles as a 64 bit native binary. However, the binaries above are 32 bit applications, but should run in compatibility mode on x86_64 architecture (e.g. AMD machines). If you want to run native 64 bit, currently you must compile the source yourself.
The binaries above will run out the of the box on several 64 bit Linux distributions including Ubuntu Dapper. However, on some distributions, you may need a little tweaking to run the binary: you might want to try the following, which will help with other GTK applications (tested on Ubuntu Breezy Badger only, but it should also work on a Debian system - others you may have to work it out yourself).
- Follow the above instructions to dowload the 32 bit application
- Create a 32 bit pixbuf loaders file:
- Create /etc/pango32/pangorc with the following in
- Create a script to launch 32 bit applications, in /usr/bin, called 32bit, containing the following
- Launch the application from the appopriate directory with
Xara Xtreme on other Linux platforms
Sorry! We don't yet have binaries available for other Linux platforms. But just as soon as we've made the rest of the source available, you should be able to build Xara LX for any Linux platform that supports wxWidgets, and gcc version 3.4.0 or later.
Xara Xtreme on the Mac
We have a new cross-platform code base, WXWidgets based, that is cross platform C++ and should work on the Mac, but we're short of Mac developers and testers that can help progress this. If you're a Mac developer willing to help us please contact us. Our first stage goal is simply to get a working viewer to the same level as the Linux build.
